Why this? Why now? And what's "music design"?

Updated: Jan 9, 2022

If you've been on the internet long enough, you've probably been through this cycle a couple or maybe even a few times:

  1. Feeling the pressure to have a website

  2. Creating a half-baked website

  3. Becoming disinterested in your website and letting it languish

  4. Deleting your website once your realize it serves no purpose

I repeated this cycle a couple times in the late 90's and mid-2000s, and though I managed to escape the lure of MySpace and LiveJournal, by 2007 I was fully onboard with oversharing on Facebook, Twitter, and a bunch of other social networks that didn't quite make it.

Fast-forward to the Not-So-Great Pandemic of 2020 and Beyond, and with it the natural process of re-invention that many of us, especially those of us in the creative and performing arts, are currently navigating.

Either the classic website death cycle is about to begin again, or I've found that a professional page might actually do me some good this time around, allowing me to showcase an evolving portfolio of creative work that isn't simply music-based anymore.

So, behold GROBIE.MIX. Or grobiemix.com if you wanna be technical about the URL.

MIX? Yeah, there are several reasons for that.

  1. It's a MIX of multiple areas of interest, both professional and personal.

  2. MIX feels very music-audio-tech-y, and I like it.

  3. GROBIE.MIX rhymes with my Instagram identities grobie.pix and grobie.brix

  4. MIX has three letters that represent my three main professional areas of focus right now:

M = MUSIC DESIGN

I = INTERACTION DESIGN (a way of talking about UX/UI design)

X = XR DESIGN (XR being an umbrella term combinging VR and AR)

So, feeling clever, I named my website GROBIE.MIX. (Now might also be a good time to mention that GROBIE.DESIGN also links here, in case my newfound cleverness gets tiresome.)

You'll hear a lot about my adventures in UX/UI and VR/AR in future posts, but those of you who know me primarily as a musician and music director are already like, "What's music design"?

It's a handy way of encapsulating a lot of my music tech/notation/audio/performance/MD skills into a fresh and flexible term that invites conversation and curiosity--as evidenced by the fact that you've read this far. It also links up nicely with my interests in UX and XR to form a sort of "design triumvirate".

This site will likely shape up to be part design portfolio, part blog, part self-promotion, part cool link sharing, part networking. Hopefully all wrapped up in an attractive and fun package. Stick around.
